Skilled visas under Australia’s General Skilled Migration programme provide the visa pathway that most migrants have historically used to obtain permanent residency. Applicants can apply based on their skills in an occupation identified by the Department of Home Affairs & Immigration (DHA) or an Australian state or territory government as being eligible for a skilled visa. Generally, those applying do not require a pre-existing job offer from an Australian employer as the eligible occupations are all in high demand locally, which makes this visa stream very appealing to more intending migrants.

SKILLED POINTS TESTED PROCESS

Step by step

The skilled (points tested) visa process involves several distinct stages, each involving its own test or application. The current minimum pass mark is 65 points (increased from 60 points on 1st July 2018). However, due to the competitive nature of the program applicants are often selected on higher points. Step 1. English Language

Most applicants will also need to sit an English test to increase their points total, giving them a better chance of success.

Step 2. Skills Assessment

Applicants must obtain a Skills Assessment from the relevant skills assessing authority for their occupation.

Step 3. Expression of Interest

All applicants must then submit an Expression of Interest to be considered for selection to progress further.

Step 4. State Nomination (if applicable)

State/Territory Governments will select candidates from the Expression of Interest pool to apply for State Nomination.

Step 5. Invitation to Apply

The DHA will invite a select number of applicants to lodge final visa applications based on the number of points they score or if they have been sponsored by an eligible family member or have been nominated a State\Territory Government.

Step 6. Visa Application

Applicants have 60 days in which to lodge their final visa application together with paying the final visa application charges. The visa will be processed after everyone on the application has cleared police and medical checks.
