DIAC impose new visa application charges from 1st July 2013

20 Jun 2013

An announcement was recently been made by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) that new visa application charges will come into effect from 1 July.

The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) have expressed concerns to the government about the fee hikes - but this seems to have had no effect on DIAC's decision.

The application fee changes will include additional applicant or "per person" charges;  for additional persons over the age of 18, and for those under 18.

This will not affect single applicants. However, applicants intending to migrate with their partners, and/or children, will be charged extra for each family member on the application.

The application charges for skilled migration (subclass 189/190 and 489) are as follows:

Main applicant's visa application charge:               A$3,060
Secondary applicants over 18 yrs/ per person:      A$1,530
Secondary applicants under 18 yrs/ per person:    A$   765

For example: the visa application cost for a family of 5 (consisting of mom, dad, a 19 year old child and 2 toddlers) from 1st July 2013 will be as follows: A$3,060 + A$1,530 + A$1,530 + A$765 + A$765 =  A$7,650 in total.

Whilst this is a big increase it is a small proportion of the total cost of moving to Australia, and should be looked at in the context of all the advantages which come with of permanent residency. This would include: eventual citizenship, health care, other social security benefits, and the first time home owners allowance.
